At the time, we did not have any cameras set up, but I would take photos with my phone on a selfie stick to monitor the growth of the babies! You can see a short video of this nest here: • Thorne's First NestWatch / May 2022 / Hous... In March of 2023, our house finches returned and we set up a camera to personally observe them. Mom laid 5 eggs, but unfortunately in the middle of the night, a snake infiltrated the nest and ate all 5 eggs. Since then, I’ve diligently researched how I can make our nest area as safe as possible in case they decided to come back. Thankfully, our house finches did decide to return! We documented their first successful brood of 2023 all on this channel, so go check out all of those videos showing nest building, egg laying, incubation, hatching of the eggs and raising the brood! After our house finch chicks fledged, we cleaned out their old nest and were absolutely surprised when eastern bluebirds started visiting the nest area! Bluebirds are usually cavity nesters, and seeing as our nest area isn’t necessarily a cavity, we were doubtful they’d go through with nesting here…but wow weren’t we wrong! The bluebirds did decide to nest here and we had the amazing opportunity to livestream from nest building to babies fledging! We also have a playlist of our favorite highlights, including some pretty amazing egg drama involving another bird entirely! You can check that out here: • Bluebird 1st Brood of 2023 Clips & Highlights Since the bluebirds’ initial arrival in 2023, we continued to enjoy two more successful bluebird broods in 2024, and in 2025, the blues decided to nest elsewhere and we had one successful house finch brood. For the start of the 2026 nest season, it looks like our house finches have decided to return yet again! 🕖 Reasons why we do separate, 12-hour streams instead of streaming continuously: 🌙 Night time is a little boring because the birds are sleeping, and all the fun things happen during the daytime! 🎥 We prefer to memorialize our streams and save them to a playlist so we can look back on them in the future. After 12 hours, YouTube starts recording over the earliest part of the stream, so as long as we stick to exactly 12 hours, we don’t lose out on saving any footage. 🪫We like to give our streaming systems a break. We have a very small, basic setup for this stream, and we feel it’s best to give it a break overnight so that our fun daytime streams can be the best they can be! 🌅 The stream will always return around sunrise when the birds are awake and active again! (Barring any potential technical difficulties). 🙏🏻 Thanks for your support and for understanding our reasons for wanting to take a break during the nighttime hours. 🔔 If you’d like to be notified as soon as our streams start in the mornings, be sure you are subscribed and press the notification bell! 📹Camera is WiFi Camera from Green Backyard.
