Q) What is the role of fallopian tubes in pregnancy ? A) - The Fallopian tubes, also known as uterine tubes, are muscular tubes that stretch from the ovaries to the uterus, in the human female reproductive system. They perform some of the main functions like: -Transport sperm cells to the egg -Provide a suitable environment for fertilization or pregnancy to take place -And transport the egg from the ovary, where it is produced, to the uterus. Q) What happens if fallopian tubes are blocked? A) -It is important to note that partial or complete blockage of fallopian tubes may cause difficulty in concieving or a very complicated pregnancy. -It is the cause of infertility in 40% of females -If one fallopian tube is blocked, it may still be possible for an egg to be fertilized. If both are blocked, this is less likely. This is because the fertilization takes place in these tubes. -With at least one fallopian tube in a healthy condition, having a natural or IUI-assisted pregnancy is possible. -On the other hand, if both tubes are experiencing problems, getting pregnant is more difficult. -A partially blocked fallopian tube may also result in ectopic pregnancy, that means when the embryo is placed in the tubes rather than uterus. This is a critical condition for the health of the mother and the baby. If you have a difficulty in getting pregnant, look out for the following symptoms to know if the fallopian tubes are the root cause of your problem. Blocked fallopian tubes do not often present symptoms other than difficulty in conceiving. Most women do not even come to know about this condition, until they start trying. A blocked fallopian tube may cause some women to experience symptoms such as pain in the pelvis or belly. This pain might happen regularly, such as around the time of their period, or be constant. Q) What are the causes of fallopian tube blockage ? A) - Fallopian tubes can become blocked for a range of reasons, which include: A history of pelvic infection Having had a sexually transmitted disease, such as gonorrhea or chlamydia Endometriosis, a condition that causes the lining of the womb to grow outside of the uterus History of abdominal surgery Hydrosalpinx, which is swelling and fluid at the end of a fallopian tube Long term usage of contraceptive devices Repeated abortions In most cases, these conditions or procedures create scar tissue that can block the tubes. Now, to diagnose the blockage, there are many tests that are recommended which can help us to determine the percenage of blockage in the tube. An X-ray test, known as a hysterosalpingogram or HSG. A doctor injects a harmless dye into the womb, which should flow into the fallopian tubes. The stain is visible on an X-ray. If the fluid does not flow into the fallopian tubes, they may have a blockage. An ultrasound test, known as a sonohysterogram. This is very similar to the HSG test but uses sound waves to build up a picture of the fallopian tubes. Keyhole surgery, known as a laparoscopy. A surgeon makes a small cut in the body and inserts a tiny camera to take pictures of the fallopian tubes from inside.
