Flatfoot, a condition that occurs when the arch on your foot is collapsing down, is explained in this video by Dr. Shane from the Orlando Foot and Ankle Clinic. Often called pronation syndrome or collapsed arches, it is diagnosed in everyone from young children to the elderly. Most of the time, genetics are to blame as it can be inherited from other family members. However, it can also be caused by trauma. Symptoms include tightening of the tendons, the dysfunctions of some tendons, the shifting around of the bones, and the arch turning inward. Noticeable symptoms include aching and tightness of the legs, problems in the knees and hips and feeling like you can't walk as far as others. You may notice an inward turn of the foot and ankle and an outward turn of the heel as well as strain and stress in the back calf muscles. Children with flat foot tend not to run as fast as others. Most can be treated with a custom orthotic or reconstructive surgery as a last resort. Depending on the diagnosis, there are several surgery options: the lengthening of the Achilles tendon, the placement of a device in the heel to hold it in alignment, a bone graph placed in the heel bone to shift back into alignment, and a tendon transfer.
