In fact, I doubt you wake up in the morning wondering “how can I make myself weak and vulnerable today?” Being brave isn’t something someone is born with, it’s something someone learns to do. Bravery is a practice and a habit, and it is often the single bold choice standing between you and your dreams. It takes practice to become brave by habit, and practice does not mean perfection. It simply means making the decision to try, and having the willingness to repeat it. #2: THE 5 SECOND RULE Mel Robbins has what she likes to call The 5 Second Rule, and she’s not referring to dropped food on the floor. Her theory suggests it takes 5 seconds for your brain to kick in and decide whether or not it’s going to do something. There is always that split second where we are faced with a decision. A brief moment where we can either hesitate or decide to jump in anyway. Within that micro-moment, our brain begins to travel down the familiar path of self-doubt, fear and what it likes to do best - keep us safe. Mel’s concept is the simple act of counting backward… 5, 4, 3, 2, and to act as you reach 1. Comparing your decision to a rocket blasting off, this process cuts down on the brain’s ability to self-sabotage and gives you a fresh opportunity to replace an old habit with a new one. #3: BE ONE OF THE BRAVE ONES To me, being one of the brave ones has always meant showing up every day with courage, authenticity, and a commitment to my truth and goals. The act of being brave is being willing to show up while fully knowing you don’t have it all figured out just yet. Good things come to those who persevere, especially those who practice courage. Digging deep, finding strength, and poking holes in our old and tired excuses can be one of the most rewarding joys in life. Here are 5 simple ways to embody bravery and turn your dreams into your reality. #4: PRACTICE SELF LOVE Self-love is a skill you can develop - much like bravery or self-confidence. Simply put, self-love means that you have an appreciation, and positive regard for who you already are. Loving yourself means seeing your strengths and weaknesses as a part of you and not making one better over the other. Despite what the perfectionists may think, loving yourself doesn’t mean holding yourself to impossibly high standards either. It simply means embracing who you truly are, and seeing it (maybe for the first time!) as perfect without changing a thing. #5: DON'T LET SETBACKS SET YOU BACK You can make the most detailed plan for your future, but there’s no telling what road block or detour might be placed on your path along the way. Setbacks can be discouraging in the moment, but they’re also great opportunities to continue learning and growing.
