#baroquemusic #opera #BarbaraStrozzi Strozzi was remarkable for more than her surprising modern lifestyle, she was also the most prolific published composer of secular vocal music in Venice at the time. This specialism in vocal music is no doubt linked to her father’s profession as a poet and her incredible vocal talent. With 125 works to her name, there is plenty of Strozzi’s music to explore. Her talent as a composer can be found in her careful setting of texts to perfectly reflect the emotion of the poem’s subject. There’s also an intimacy to her work, usually just one soprano and a few instruments, that allows the listener to personally connect with the text. This results in some truly heartbreaking moments, guaranteeing more than a few tears from the audience. Like L’Eraclito amoroso, this is also a setting of a secular poem that speaks of love and loss. Yet, this lament is from the perspective of a man, even though Strozzi specifies a soprano in her composition. Lagrime mie provides a good example of Strozzi’s skill at text-painting (illustrating the words of the text with music), take just the first word ‘lagrime’ (‘tears’) for example, the vocals waver as though the subject himself is crying. Painting: Briséis entraînée de la tente d'Achille, 1761, Jean-Baptiste-Henri Deshays.
