Dents made when Metro Police kicked in the front door of Azaria Hines’ Edgehill home remain. She says so too does the trauma of that scary morning when police raided the wrong apartment. “I feel violated. I feel embarrassed. I’m humiliated. Everybody is all in my business. And all of this for nothing, for something that I had nothing to even do with,” said Hines. Chief John Drake decommissioned three officers after this body cam video showed police using outdated information and use what he calls “excessive force” to search the wrong apartment. “I’m holding on to the door like wait a minute. I don’t have any clothes on. And they’re like step back step back,” said Hines. An MDHA spokeswoman tells FOX 17 News’ Harriet Wallace the agency stopped sharing resident information with police in 2018 to protect their privacy. She says offers accessed that data base that showed the suspect they wanted still living there. He moved out at least one year ago. A police spokeswoman tells Wallace an officer and community representative followed up with Hines the next day to make it right. They dropped off bags of groceries, a move Hines says is wrong. “Groceries isn’t what I need. I need a peace of mind. I haven’t had any sleep since this happened. I haven’t had a whole night of sleep since this happened. I don’t feel comfortable in my own home. My door is still not fixed all the way,” added Hines. Family pastor, Davie Tucker says the attempt to make up for what happened is an example of implicit bias in the department that needs to be corrected. “To me it suggests that a single black female raising kids in a housing development needs groceries. That becomes an insult. At the very least, it is totally insensitive," he said. Tucker, also a member of the Metro Human Relations Commission, recommended police undergo a more stringent victim sensitivity training but he says they passed. Instead, he says they rely on a one day tour of communities of color. “That’s a dog and pony show. It’s time for police department to reimagine what the department looks like and it doesn’t look like $200 in groceries from Aldi’s,” said Pastor Tucker.
