This year is FLYING BY, and we're already in September. This is a really interesting month because it's a transitional time as we shift from the warm season to the cool season. 0:33 The Fall Effect Let's talk a little more about this change, especially the Fall Effect. After the summer solstice, we lose about one to three minutes of sunlight per day until we hit the winter solstice. That may not sound like much, but it adds up to about an hour per month. The difference in daylight on those two days is more than four hours! So what does this mean for the garden? Less sunlight means plants are going to grow more slowly. This means a lot of warm-season crops are going to struggle. On the other hand, it's the perfect time for cool season crops! With that in mind, we recommend starting some of your cool season crops as early as September and October. You'll have harvests for the holidays, and the plants will start to really take off in January and onward. 2:47 What To Plant in September For a fully comprehensive list, check out the calendar, but we've highlighted some of our favorites and most popular crops here. You can start your brassicas since they take a longer time to develop than something like lettuce or radishes. Greens are a great option, but you can wait for a few weeks too. Be sure to always succession plant as well! Root crops are another great thing to grow. Some are faster than others, so plan your garden accordingly. If you are planting this time of year, consider using a row cover to protect your baby seedlings! In short, we recommend either starting them inside (with some combination of grow lights or next to a window) or outside in the shade. Either way, you'll want to give your plants as much light as you can without burning them up, so it's a balancing act. If you've made it this far, you deserve a little reward.
