The Evening Brown butterfly (Melanitis leda) is unusual because it can be active at night. Other butterflies are active when the sun is shining because they use solar energy for flight. Evening Brown butterflies have dense short insulating hairs on their bodies which help keep their body temperature higher so they can be active at night even in winter. The underside of their wings are brown and mimic dead leaves and the upper side of the wings are a beautiful orange colour.
