(12 Jul 1995) T/I: 11:23:56 Bosnian President Alija Izetbegovic said in Sarajevo on Wednesday (12/7) that the United Nations and NATO must retake the Bosnian enclave of Srebrnica, which fell to advancing Bosnian Serb forces on Tuesday. In his first public comment since the fall of Srebrenica, Izetbegovic said if the United Nations could not or would not retake the city, then it should admit it publicly. Izetbegovic also demanded that the United Nations work with the UNHCR in providing food and medical aid for refugees from Srebrnica. Izetbegovic said if necessary air drops should be used to get relief supplies to the refugees. He said he felt United Nations special envoy Yasushi Akashi should resign. The Bosnian president said Akashi was the personification of the hesitation shown by the U.N. handling of the Srebrenica crisis.
