Construction Site Visit: A Day In The Life of An Architect, Archi Vlog#4

Welcome to the Brothers Workshop! In this video Dave (a licensed architect with his own practice) brings you along on a construction site visit of the first independent project of his to begin the construction phase. While a large portion of this video takes place during the construction site visit, Dave makes sure he shares some history of this little ice cream shop project, and how he became a part of the team to bring it into reality. The Owner of the project brought Dave on after hitting a wall when the local building department required them to have a new construction permit, and a set of construction documents (blueprints) created and stamped by an architect. Dave later found out that the owner had torn down a building that had already existed in the same location which they had received a permit to renovate. When the township found out the building had been completely removed, they halted all work, and required that an architect be a part of the team and that a geotechnical analysis be completed for a portion of the property adjacent to a creek. Dave explains this long backstory, and the large amount of complexities associated with a project this small (600 square feet.) This project is a case study in why it is important to bring an architect on early in the process of project development. Not only are architects design professionals, but a large portion of their job is project coordination and project management, building and energy code evaluation, and protecting the life, safety, and welfare of the public. By not brining an architect on early in the development of a project, you set yourself up for undue headaches.
