Tent Heat Test Part 2 | Mr Heater Big Buddy vs Vevor Diesel Heater

We took Part 2 of my tent heating test into the real world — Curt Gowdy State Park (Wyoming), camping near Crystal Lake — to see what actually happens when you run heat in an inflatable camping tent during a windy, cold night (overnight low was around 10°F - 20°F). Before the trip I did a quick sanity-check on the Vevor diesel heater and patched the small floor hole from my previous wood-stove test — then it was time to run the overnight experiment. What we tested in the tent ✅ Mr. Heater Big Buddy propane heater (Low) • Goal: run it 4–6 hours and track CO levels + propane use • Reality: it shut off unexpectedly (twice), which forced us to pivot ✅ Vevor diesel heater • Took a bit to start (~10 minutes) • At first it started pushing smoke into the tent, so we shut things down and re-thought the setup • Later we moved the heater outside the tent and routed only the heated duct inside — which worked better, but with the heater on low the tent stayed around 45°F while the wind hammered us all night Camp setup + food (because priorities) My air mattress from Part 1 was toast, so I switched to two single-person Coleman cots — surprisingly comfortable. While we waited on the heater test we cooked dinner: jalapeño cheddar brats, hot dogs, salad, and potato salad, then in the morning some premade breakfast burritos (and used the propane heater to warm them up). What I learned (realistic takeaways) • Propane heater: Great for short-term warmth and quick heat boosts, but it needs serious ventilation and you can’t ignore CO risk (plus it may shut off if oxygen gets low in a sealed tent). • Diesel heater: My preferred option for overnight heat if you can power it properly. I ran it on a Jackery Explorer 100 (which is limiting), and I think something like a Jackery Explorer 1000 (I grabbed a refurbished one on Amazon) makes it far more realistic to run higher output longer and keep the tent warmer. CO safety moment: • 50 ppm (workplace 8-hour limit) • 150 ppm (typical alarm triggers 10–50 min) • 400 ppm (typical alarm triggers 4–15 min) Both devices have safety features (the diesel heater has a CO monitor) but I still recommend a CO alarm that warns at 50ppm so you have time to react.
