Researchers at Champalimaud Research’s Learning Lab propose a "population clock" model, explaining that our brains host waves of neural activity carrying the rhythm of time, impacting our subjective experience of it. A key component in this mechanism is the striatum, a deep-seated brain region whose patterns of activity can alter our perception of time. By manipulating the temperature of the striatum in rats, researchers were able to speed up and slow down these patterns, effectively changing the rats' perception of time. Interestingly, these manipulations didn't affect the animals' motor actions, suggesting a division of tasks within the brain. This research could have profound implications for understanding neurological disorders like Parkinson's and cerebellar ataxia, possibly leading to more targeted therapies. Additionally, it might impact algorithmic frameworks used in robotics and machine learning.
