White Cloud Mountain Minnow Care Guide – Everything You Need To Know For Thriving Fish! White Cloud Mountain Minnows are one of the most underrated fish in the aquarium hobby, and in this video I’ll be sharing a complete care guide based on my own experience keeping them. These fish are affordable, easy to find, hardy, and a fantastic choice for beginners, yet they’re active and interesting enough for experienced fishkeepers as well. They also work well in a wide variety of setups, from unheated tanks to planted aquascapes, and can even thrive in filterless systems under the right conditions. There are a few different varieties available in the hobby. The regular White Clouds have a darker body with a pale horizontal stripe and bright red accents on the fins and snout, while the Golden White Cloud—my personal favorite—features a lighter yellow-gold body that makes them stand out beautifully in planted aquariums. Long-finned “Meteor Minnows” are also fairly common, and there are rarer selectively bred color forms like pink and red. Despite their different looks, all of these varieties share the same care needs, making them easy to mix and match in your fish room. When it comes to tank setup, size matters more than people sometimes think. Even though they grow to just over 4 cm, they’re extremely active swimmers and social fish, so I recommend keeping them in groups of at least six in a minimum of a 54-litre (14-gallon) aquarium. Smaller tanks can work, but I’ve found that giving them extra horizontal swimming space makes a big difference in how they behave and display. They do especially well in aquascaped tanks with plenty of plants and hardscape to provide cover. In my own setup, the dominant male often chases the others until they retreat into the plants, which creates natural social interactions and even encourages breeding. Water parameters are one of the reasons White Clouds are such a popular beginner species. They’re native to temperate regions of China and can tolerate a wide range of conditions. They survive in water as cold as 5°C (41°F), which explains how they’ve managed to establish invasive populations in certain parts of the world, but they also handle warmer water up to about 22°C (72°F). For pH, anything between 6.5 and 8 is fine, and they’re equally comfortable in soft or hard water. Stability is key, so as long as your tank is cycled and parameters are steady, they’ll do well. Feeding White Clouds couldn’t be easier. They’re omnivores and will accept almost any aquarium food. I mainly rely on Hikari Micro Pellets and Fluval Bug Bites, which balance each other well and provide great nutrition. I also treat mine to frozen daphnia or cyclops, which they go crazy for. They’ll happily pick at food throughout the tank, even nibbling on shrimp wafers, making them both versatile and efficient feeders. Behaviorally, White Clouds are lively and entertaining. While they aren’t true schooling fish like Neon Tetras, they’re very interactive with bursts of chasing, sparring, and breeding activity. They spend a lot of time in the lower half of the tank in my experience, which makes them excellent companions for shrimp and snails. I’ve never had issues with them bothering my Neocaridina or Amano shrimp, and they seem completely peaceful with invertebrates. As for tank mates, they’re flexible enough to fit into many community aquariums. Other temperate species like Zebra Danios, Medaka Rice Fish, and Celestial Pearl Danios are great choices, but they also pair well with tropical species that prefer the lower end of the tropical temperature range.
