US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth holds a press conference after NATO defence ministers meeting. The Nato chief Mark Rutte said it was crucial that Kyiv was “closely involved” in any talks about what happened in Ukraine. Speaking after a meeting of the alliance’s defence ministers, the secretary-general stressed that Ukraine had never been promised membership of the alliance as part of a peace deal. “Whatever the outcome is we have to make sure that Vladimir Putin will never, ever try again to attack Ukraine. That is crucial,” he said. Rutte expected European nations to step up and take on more of the financial burden of military aid to Ukraine as Trump’s administration seeks to limit funding to the country.
