As we speak, members of the heritage conservation sector are completing a landmark nation-wide survey that asks probing questions about our values and the purpose of our work in heritage – for example: What motivates your own personal connection to heritage conservation? How much of your efforts in heritage conservation are now related to climate action – or reconciliation, diversity, and inclusion – or economic vitality? In parallel, a national public opinion poll is gathering opinions about heritage conservation from the general public to get insights into why those outside the sector care about preserving heritage buildings, sites and landscapes in Canada – and how they view our collective efforts. This gathering is an opportunity to explore the issues behind the surveys – part of the Heritage Reset project prompted by dialogue around the goals of the heritage conservation field in a time of rapid societal change. The Heritage Reset is an important national initiative led by the Trust and a dozen partner organizations across the country, and partially funded by the government of Canada.
