(6 Aug 2009) HEADLINE: Senate confirms Sotomayor for Supreme Court CAPTION:The Senate has confirmed Sonia Sotomayor as the first Hispanic Justice on the US Supreme Court. The vote was 68-31 for Sotomayor, President Barack Obama's first high court nominee. (Aug. 6) [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] NB. THIS IS A VOICEOVER TRANSCRIPT, NOT A FULL SHOT LIST. NATS UP-- vote Sonia Sotomayor made history on Thursday when she became the first Hispanic justice of the Supreme Court. The Democratic-led Senate confirmed President Barack Obama's high court nominee. This despite staunch opposition from Republicans who called her ill-suited for the bench. Critics contended she would bring liberal bias and personal sympathies to her decisions. Obama named Sotomayor to replace retiring Justice David Souter, a liberal named by a Republican president George H-W Bush. Sotomayor isn't expected to alter the court's ideological balance. Sotomayor is a 55-year-old appeals court judge of Puerto Rican descent. She was raised in a New York City housing project, educated in the Ivy League and served 17 years on the federal bench. Sotomayor is the third woman ever to be named to the nine-member court, where justices can serve for life.
