The Rorate Mass is one of the most beautiful and ancient Catholic Advent traditions, deeply rooted in devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Celebrated during Advent—often before sunrise and by candlelight—this special votive Mass expresses the Church’s longing for the coming of Christ, the Light of the World. The name Rorate comes from the Latin introit “Rorate caeli desuper” (“Drop down dew, you heavens”), taken from Isaiah 45:8, a powerful prophecy of the Messiah. Traditionally, the Mass is celebrated with the church in darkness, illuminated only by candles, symbolising a world waiting in hope before Christ’s birth. The Rorate Mass is especially cherished in German-speaking countries, Austria, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, and parts of Eastern Europe, though it is increasingly celebrated worldwide. White vestments are often used instead of Advent violet, highlighting Mary’s role as the one who carried Christ into the darkness of the world. This Mass invites the faithful into silence, reverence, and deep anticipation, reminding us that Advent is not only preparation—but hope, trust, and waiting with Mary for the fulfilment of God’s promise.
