In this sermon, we begin a series on the miracles of Christ by examining His very first sign: turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana (John 2:1–11). This miracle is far more than a display of supernatural power — it is a sign, a revelation of Christ’s glory, and the opening act of His public ministry. We explore why John calls this miracle “the beginning of signs,” how it connects back to John 1 (“we beheld His glory”), and how it points forward to the purpose of the entire Gospel: that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name (John 20:30–31). This message also examines: Why Jesus distances Himself from Mary with the phrase, “Woman, what does this have to do with me?” How Christ’s miracles function as living parables revealing who He is The contrast between Moses’ first sign (water to blood) and Jesus’ first sign (water to wine) Why the setting — a humble wedding among ordinary people — reveals the heart of Christ How signs, wonders, and mighty works point us to the fullness of grace and truth If you want to understand the purpose of miracles, the meaning of biblical signs, or the glory of Christ revealed in the Gospel of John, this sermon lays the foundation for the entire series.
