(31 Jan 2018) It was mixed reviews on Capitol Hill on Tuesday following President Trump's first State of the Union Address. Some members of Congress expressing delight in the president's message, as others expressed disgust and disappointment. California Rep. Eric Swalwell, D- CA, going as far as saying that the only thing the president proved on Tuesday was that he knew how to read. He called on President Trump to "roll-up his sleeves and get to work. Otherwise, these are just words," he said. Frustration from the president's lack of mentions were also an issue with some. Like for Texas Democratic Reps. Al Green and Sheila Jackson Lee, whom both wished the president had mentioned the suffering still being felt nearly six months after Hurricane Harvey struck Texas. But much like Swalwell, Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro also found Trump's lack of attention to Russian election interference and what he called the administration's blatant refusal to impose a new wave of sanctions, the most troubling. Trump's address Tuesday night blended self-congratulation and calls for optimism amid a growing economy with ominous warnings about deadly gangs, the scourge of drugs and violent immigrants living in the United States illegally. He also spoke forebodingly of catastrophic dangers from abroad, warning that North Korea would "very soon" threaten the United States with nuclear-tipped missiles. And addressed the nation with tensions running high on Capitol Hill.
