Phil Medley - Happy Walk [Funk / Soul] (1976 Full Album)

"Happy Walk" is the 1976 debut album by American songwriter & orchestra leader Phil Medley. Although you may not be familar with his name, you may be familar with a song that he co-wrote with Bert Berns: Twist And Shout. The song was made famous through artists like The Isley Brothers, The Beatles, The Mircales and The Kingsmen among many others. Although that song was written early on in his career during the early 1960's, he was still working in the music industry by the time he got to record an album of his own. The album was released on the New York record label Pyramid Records, notable for releasing popular works of disco artist D.C. LaRue and disco phase of Pat Lundy. The musicians on this album is a nice mix of session musicians, both newer and experienced. Some of note are Bob Babbitt, Herschel Dwellingham, Jimmy Young, Jerry Friedman, Babe Clark, Lew Soloff, Ronnie Cuber, Julien Barber and Patti Austin. All of them combined have a heavy history with jazz playing with the likes of Weather Report, Ornette Coleman, Stan Getz, Weldon Irvine, Roy Ayers, George Benson and many more. Taking all that into account defintely explains the prominent jazz aura the album displays across most of it's tracks. Although his solo career was short, "Happy Walk" was his most commercially successful effort. It spawned a single, "Snap It", and got also got distribution in Canada, Italy, Spain and France. He would release one more album ("After Hours '77") in the following year before fading into the background of session work again. In recent years, "Happy Walk" has started to be sampled by quite a few artists. In fact, the only reason I know about it was because I was looking for a sample used in a track by Rahim Samad, "(Soul)ar Plexxus". I really liked the sample used on the track, but couldn't find what it was for the life of me. I isolated the instrumental from the track using Ultimate Vocal Remover and tried using Google Assistant in an attempt to get a match with the original track. Each time I tried to manipulate the sample, I would just get an entirely different track that also used the same sample. I found over 10 of these, but not the original. I was left at a standstill and didn't know what to do. Later on I met GamesHarder, a user on WhoSampled who was responsible for some great jazz sample finds. I messaged them about their work and asked them how they found samples as obscure as the ones they were submitting. They were very nice and explained their process of using music recognition software to me. I mentioned that I was looking for the sample used on "(Soul)ar Plexxus", and they became interested in looking for it too. An stroke of luck came when GamesHarder recognized that one of the samples had a vocal saying "Sheila's always there". They then went to Discogs and just looked up the word "Sheila" and filtered by genre in the decade of the 1970's. Eventually they came upon Phil Medley's album where there was a track called "Sheila" on it. Thankfully there was a Youtube rip of the song, and after listening it became immediately apparent that this was the sample that we were looking for. They then told me this, I was very thankful, and I promptly bought the album off of Discogs. I got the album in the mail, cleaned it, and started to rip it. I had to rip the album three total times due to there still being gunk dug out of the grooves on the second try. The third was cleanest rip of them all, and required the least amount of manual de-clicking on my part. Now, for your listening enjoyment (and perhaps sample spotting), here's "Happy Walk"! 00:00 1. Chunky Butt 5:46 2. Sheila 9:01 3. Pyramid Waltz 12:08 4. Snap It 16:30 5. Moon Medley (Fly Me To The Moon / Blue Moon/ Full Moon And Empty Arms) 24:56 6.
