A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye that impairs vision. Most cataracts are age-related—they happen because of normal changes in your eyes as you get older. But you can get cataracts for other reasons, too. No matter what type of cataract you have, the treatment is always surgery. The treatment for cataracts is always surgery, regardless of the type. So basically, a small incision is made on the side of the cornea, the clear, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye. Your doctor inserts a tiny probe into the eye. This device emits ultrasound waves that soften and break up the lens so that it can be removed by suction. Most cataract surgeries today are done by phacoemulsification, also called "small incision cataract surgery."
