Demolishing the Harrison Street Bridge In Chicago | Volvo Demolition Excavators | Watch Me Work 3

The project in Watch Me Work Episode 3 was the removal of the “Harrison Street Bridge” in downtown Chicago with ‪@milburndemolition2414‬. It was complex in nature because it runs over numerous railroad tracks that service Metra and Amtrak Commuter trains in and out of Union Station, which is the largest passenger train hub in Chicago. As you can see in the video, the pile of timbers is part of the major protection requirements for demolishing a bridge of this type over train tracks. The total bridge removal scope included the removal of 22 spans of concrete bridge and concrete-encased steel substructures. 6 spans out of the 22 were directly on top of active train tracks. As such, these spans had to be performed during track shutdown periods which are allowed from 10 pm Friday night to 5 am Monday morning. These weekends over track spans were an all-out battle to allow for the installation of heavy protection at tracks, removal of deck, girders, bents, piers, and finally, removal of protection. Everything within this project had to be pre-planned down to the hour to ensure nothing prevented the tracks from being re-opened on Monday at 5 am. LOTS of urgencies.
