In March 2017, researchers from the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition tested an Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV) for marine surveying and research. The trials took place on two waterways in Pensacola, Bayou Chico and Bayou Texar, and were designed to demonstrate the capabilities and possibilities of utilizing robotic research platforms for chemical mapping and seafloor surveying in a real world setting. The Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition is a non-for profit research facility located in Pensacola Florida. The underwater MIMS instrument was used to continuously sample the water for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), dissolved gases, and light hydrocarbons. The MIMS device enables advanced underwater chemical surveys to monitor ocean and coastal resources, water treatment and management applications, and oil and gas exploration.
