Paper Kingdom is a story about heartbreak, self-reflection, and the painful journey of learning to let go. It’s about the kind of love that leaves scars - the kind you only truly understand long after it’s over. But more than that, it’s my story. This album is a deeply personal look at the loss of something that meant everything - the worst end to the best chapter of my life. This album traces the highs of blind devotion, plummets to the lows of self-doubt, and marches through the slow, agonising process of letting go and moving forward - even when part of you still wants to stay behind. I never set out to write an album about my own heartbreak. In the beginning, Paper Kingdom was meant to be a fictionalised story, something separate from my reality. But as time passed and the love I thought I had deteriorated, I realised I was telling the truth - whether I meant to or not. The timeline of the final months of my relationship and the struggle afterwards bled into the music, mirroring my own struggle to let go and ultimately becoming the rawest truth I’ve ever put into music. As my relationship unravelled, so did my illusion of distance from the story I was telling. I was writing about myself - my anger, my heartbreak, and my struggle to let go of something, or more accurately, someone, I held so close. The title track, Paper Kingdom, captures the moment I finally saw my past relationship for what it was - fragile, unsustainable, and built on something that was always bound to crumble. The album’s lead single, True Love - comprised of Stars Above and Chasing Dreams - captures both the beginning and the end. Stars Above is the sound of love at its peak, a time when I was overwhelmed by love and saw her as the brightest thing in my world. Chasing Dreams is what I couldn't see at the time; the painful clarity that followed when I realised she was losing herself in trying to be what I wanted. Because of that, our relationship collapsed. I only paired these songs together after my breakup, and putting them together wasn’t just about telling the story - it was about understanding it myself, about trying to make sense of how something that once felt so right could fall apart so easily. These songs are my way of piecing together the past, of acknowledging what was beautiful and what was broken - all in the same breath. Throughout the album, I move through every stage of grief. There’s bargaining in Closing Credits, where I let myself believe I could go back, even if it meant losing myself in the process. Frustration in New Year, Old Me, where I lash out at my own inability to change. Longing in Miss You, characterising the part of me that still searches for her love despite it already being gone. By the end, with Goodnight, Goodbye, I finally let go. Not because I wanted to, but because I had to. This album is for anyone who has ever held on too tightly to something already slipping away. It’s for those who have replayed old memories, searching for answers that don’t exist. It’s for those who are learning - just like I was - that sometimes the hardest thing to do is the right thing.
