Walter Gieseking Plays Debussy Pour Le Piano & Estampes - 1980 Reissue of 1954 Recording

Walter Gieseking (1895-1956) was a German pianist known for his subtle touch, nuance, and technique. He was well known for his playing of Debussy and Ravel. He reportedly had a natural gift for memorizing music and did not need to practice a great deal at the piano, but preferred to rehearse pieces in his head. He began to perform publicly before World War I. His career was interrupted by both World Wars, and after the second World War he resumed his career, although he was not immediately welcome in some countries (including the US) due to his politics during the war. This recording was completed for Angel Records only two years before his early death at the age of 61 (the result of a complications from pancreatic surgery.) This reissue unfortunately used simulated stereo, an unfortunate fad in the 1970s and 1980s for reissuing mono recordings. The result of this process is almost always a worse sounding record. Thus for this posting, I have transferred it back into the original mono format.
