Ravalomanana walking up steps with entourage STORYLINE: Madagascar's main opposition leader declared himself president during a massive rally Friday, bringing a two-month conflict over presidential election results to a head. Marc Ravalomanana held a defiant swearing-in ceremony before a crowd of 100,000 supporters in a soccer stadium in the capital, Antananarivo. A magistrate administered the oath of office as the crowd cheered. Eight judges and several influential church leaders attended the rally. The government of President Didier Ratsiraka had no immediate reaction. However, state radio replayed a statement by Prime Minister Tantely Andrianarivo warning Ravalomanana not to unilaterally declare himself president. In a speech following the ceremony, Ravalomanana promised he would take Madagascar out of poverty and bring it into the developing world. He said he had decided to take power because the misery in the country had become intolerable and because he was accepting the wish of the Madagascan people.
