Four people were detained and at least one man was hospitalised with injuries on Thursday, authorities said. In some of the worst of the violence on Thursday, protesters clashed heavily with riot police in the municipality of Korydallos, in the western suburbs of Athens. Police were even forced to beat a hasty retreat as they tried to arrest one young demonstrator, with the surging and angry crowd vastly outnumbering the officers. At least 70 people have now been injured and around 100 arrested since Saturday, when the rioting broke out within hours of the killing of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos. Hundreds of shops have been damaged or destroyed as gangs of masked youths and self-styled anarchists smashed windows with metal bars, looted stores and set up flaming street barricades in cities throughout Greece. Lawmakers in parliament, meanwhile, held a minute of silence on Thursday for the 15-year-old boy whose shooting death by police ignited the uproar on the streets. Protests have now spread beyond Greece's borders, with demonstrations in several European countries, including Italy, Spain and Denmark. While Greek diplomatic missions have been vandalised in Istanbul and New York. Greece's conservative government has come under intense criticism for its handling of the crisis, despite authorities' insistence that they avoided heavy handed policing to prevent bloodshed. The exact circumstances of the teenager's death are still disputed. Two police officers charged in the shooting said they had come under attack by rock-throwing youths, and that one of the officers fired warning shots. Witnesses who have spoken to the media disputed that account. A prosecutor ordered the two officers be remanded in custody late on Wednesday, pending trial. No date has yet been set. Protest organisers said more student demonstrations are being planned for Friday.
