Dr. Rowe demonstrates simple exercises to quickly relieve tightness and pain in the gluteus medius muscle. The gluteus medius is a fan-shaped muscle located in the buttock. It stretches from the back of the pelvis to the outer thigh and hip area. When this muscle becomes strained or inflamed, it can cause pain in the lower back, buttocks, and especially the outer hip and thigh. A common symptom is discomfort along the outer (lateral) side of the hip and thigh. This pain often stems from a combination of muscle weakness and tightness, which leads to strain and inflammation.
