Thirty years ago, youth, workers, academics and journalists joined protests in China's Tiananmen Square that ended in a massacre. The first demonstrators – students and hunger-strikers – were joined by workers and people from all walks of life until they filled the vast square, and the protests spread across hundreds of Chinese cities. In late May 1989, the government declared martial law and ordered the military to use deadly force. On June 3 and June 4, the Chinese military opened fire on the unarmed civilians. After the massacre, the government arrested thousands. PANELISTS: Wu’er Kaixi, a former Tiananmen student leader and Uyghur activist; Fang Zheng, whose legs were crushed by a tank and now leads the Chinese Democratic Education Foundation; Rose Tang, who survived by crawling over a tank and is currently a New York-based activist; and Zhou Fengsuo, who led "Voice of the Students Movement on Tiananmen Square” in 1989 and spent a year in spent a year in prison. He is co-founder of Humanitarian China, which has provided aid to families of Tiananmen victims and political prisoners. MODERATOR: William J.
