The new Land Rover Freelander is now Chinese… here’s what’s actually happening. This is no longer an official Jaguar Land Rover model. What’s been revealed — referred to as Concept 97 — is part of a new brand being developed through JLR’s joint venture with Chery in China. Instead of bringing the Land Rover Freelander back under Land Rover, the name has been repurposed into a standalone brand within that partnership. This allows JLR to compete in lower-cost, high-growth markets without impacting its core premium positioning. The design still carries clear Land Rover influence — the proportions, stance and off-road presence are unmistakable. However, the vehicle itself is built on Chery’s platforms, with a strong focus on plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains. It’s also being positioned with genuine off-road capability, rather than as a typical urban SUV — which is a key differentiator in a crowded market. From a strategy perspective, this reflects where the industry is heading. Jaguar Land Rover continues to push Range Rover, Defender and Discovery further upmarket, leaving space below for a more accessible product — just not under the Land Rover badge.
