Here are the main differences between them: Journal Bearings: Principle: Journal bearings operate on the principle of fluid film lubrication. They rely on a continuous supply of lubricant (such as oil) to create a film of lubrication between the bearing surfaces. Design: Journal bearings have a cylindrical or conical shape. They consist of a stationary outer shell (bearing housing) and a rotating inner shaft (journal). The journal is typically larger in diameter than the shaft, creating a gap where the lubricant is retained. Friction: Journal bearings have a sliding or hydrodynamic friction. The rotating shaft floats on the lubricant film, which separates it from the bearing surface and reduces friction. Load Capacity: Journal bearings can support high loads and are suitable for heavy-duty applications. Lubrication: Proper lubrication is crucial for the operation of journal bearings. They require a continuous supply of lubricant to maintain the fluid film and prevent metal-to-metal contact. Anti-Friction Bearings: Principle: Anti-friction bearings work on the principle of rolling contact. They use rolling elements (such as balls or rollers) to minimize friction between the bearing surfaces. Design: Anti-friction bearings have an inner and outer ring, between which the rolling elements are located. The rolling elements separate the rings and facilitate smooth rolling motion. Friction: Anti-friction bearings have rolling friction, which is generally lower than the sliding friction of journal bearings.
