SOUNDBITE (English) Nicky de Blois, ABC cameraman: "I had an attempted kidnapping that happened to me two years ago, it wasn't a very good situation and I think as foreign journalists we should be able to work in the territories and we should have free movement so we can cover the story." 5. Various of people holding up "Free Alan" posters 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Martin Fletcher, NBC correspondent: "Kidnapping Alan Johnston from the BBC is an absolute outrage. There is no justification, there is no reason to kidnap anyone, but especially a journalist who was devoting so much of his life to report fairly and accurately the Palestinian issue from Gaza." 7. Wide of demonstration 8. SOUNDBITE (English) Jonathan Baker, deputy head of newsgathering, BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) "We make a plea directly to those who are holding Alan to set him free. His only offence has been to expose himself to personal danger because of his strong desire to bring the story of Gaza to the outside world. He has paid a heavy and undeserved price for that commitment. He has suffered enough. Let him go." 9. Wide of Jonathan Baker, deputy head of BBC Jerusalem, surrounded by reporters 10. Wide of journalists sitting on ground holding posters STORYLINE Dozens of foreign and Palestinian journalists held simultaneous demonstrations on both sides of Israel's border with the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, calling for the release of a British journalist who was kidnapped by Palestinian gunmen six weeks ago. Alan Johnston, 44, a BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) correspondent, was abducted by gunmen on March 12, and has not been seen or heard from since then. Journalist Martin Fletcher, a correspondent with US broadcaster NBC, called the kidnapping "an absolute outrage." "There is no justification, there is no reason to kidnap anyone, but especially a journalist who was devoting so much of his life to report fairly and accurately the Palestinian issue from Gaza," he added. The demonstration was organised by the Foreign Press Association (FPA), which represents some 500 journalists covering Israel and the Palestinian territories for foreign media. A previously unknown group, the Brigades of Tawheed and Jihad, said on April 15 that it had killed Johnston in order to support demands for the release of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. There has been no confirmation of the claim, and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has since said he has information that Johnston is still alive. About 100 people attended the rally on the Israeli side of the Erez border crossing, holding posters of Johnston and chanting, "Free Alan". Johnston's kidnapping was the latest in a string of abductions of foreign journalists in the Gaza Strip in recent months. Jonathan Baker, the BBC's deputy head of news gathering, urged the captors to free Johnston. "He has suffered enough. Let him go," he added.
