🔊🎶 At a glance, the beach town of Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer seems pleasant on a chilly, albeit sunny day. People walk or jog down the beach, with or without their pets. Some ride horses along the shore, while a kid plays in the sand and a woman makes sand art. Seagulls frolick in the tidal pools. Cyclists and sports cars cruise on the shoreline Rue Bernard Anquetil. And a few brave souls venture into the chilly sea. However, their bravery is pale in comparison to the 43,250 American soldiers who stormed the Plage d’Omaha, aka #OmahaBeach, on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Over 3,000 soldiers sacrificed their lives that day on Omaha Beach, in one of the bloodiest days in American wartime history—but ultimately the US forces, along with Canadian and British troops, strategically entered Europe through this relatively small coastline of four Normandy beaches to stop the Nazis from overtaking all of Europe. Over 80 years since that fateful day of #WWII, a memorial stands on the beach, flanked by flags of Allied Forces, amidst the people who come to have a beach day. However, the true place of remembrance is at the American cemetery up the road, where an educational visitors center, memorial site, and graves of the brave rest in peace. “Omaha beach was a nightmare… Every man who set foot on Omaha beach that day was a hero.” –Lt. Gen. Omar Bradley — Remembrance on a September beach day in #SaintLaurentSurMer, #Normandy, #France. 🇫🇷 (Tip: Skip the Museum of Omaha Beach by the beach; it’s sort of an outdated tourist trap—I learned this the hard way. Everything is respectfully and tastefully presented at the cemetery’s visitors center—and it’s free.) #theglobaltripnormandy #theglobaltripnormandie #theglobaltripfrance
