This video explains how the Heidehain main controller talks to an Izumi PLC that performs some "auxiliary functions". It's a flexible way to make the Heidenhain controller capable of controlling many different machine tools. It's stood them in great stead as they still exist as a successful company, unlike many of the machine makers. Unfortunately the auto-focus went a bit haywire in one part, but you can see the terminals better in later parts. The Izumi has plenty of memory... a whole 4k. But it still has plenty of memory left for me to add more functions, and ladder programming is very easy to learn as it is almost identical to a schematic diagram. So it's pictorial not geek.
