On the program for Sunday and Monday, Bryan Lynn and Anna Matteo host the show. Bryan tells listeners what they are going to hear. (1:08) First, Bryan presents the Science Report on recent findings about our nearest planetary neighbor: Venus. A new study suggests Venus likely never had flowing water. The research was based on data related to the chemical makeup of the planet’s atmosphere. Even though Venus has many similarities to Earth, the study found the planet likely never had the right conditions to support water on the surface. https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a... (8:15) Then, Anna talks about expressions that come from card playing on the weekly Words and Their Stories program. Playing cards is a popular pastime for people of all ages. The game also gives the English language many idioms. Anna tells about some of the most common ones, including “keeping cards close to your chest,” “showing your hand,” and “to lay your cards on the table.” https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a... (13:30) After that, Caty Weaver reports on a proposed plan from California’s Department of Fish and Wildlife aiming to protect an unusual tree. The tree is known as the Joshua tree. A nonprofit group from Arizona says the trees are under threat from wildfires, human development and climate change. An early version of the plan calls for avoiding or reducing direct and indirect effects of overgrazing, insect-killing chemical use and off-roading activity. The plan proposes to permanently place restrictions on lands where the trees can be found. https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a... (19:44) Finally, Jill Robbins and Andrew Smith present the Lesson of the Day. This time, they explore issues in American culture. In Lesson 20, of Level 2 of Let’s Learn English, Anna and her friend Penelope go to an auto show. Jill and Andrew use the episode to show how people use reported speech in normal conversations. The episode even includes another robot! https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a...
