The south east block of Warden and Eglinton Avenue East used to be home to the largest munitions plant in Canada. The General Engineering Corporation of Ontario (GECo) plant produced more than 256 million rounds of ammunition and bombs from during World War 2 and, as men went to the front, was largely staffed by women. Originally 172 buildings made up the site; many connected by a warren of underground tunnels . But, as it was repurposed for temporary housing and then redeveloped into an industrial area post war, most of those buildings have been lost. We'll take a walk though and I'll try to figure out which ones remain based on aerial photographs from the era. Sadly, none of these buildings are heritage designated. So, they will likely be lost as much of what's now known as the 'Golden Mile' along this stretch of Eglinton is redeveloped again into housing in the coming years. At the end of the video, there's a time lapse of the area using aerial photography and Google Satellite imagery (for the latest picture). If you want to see the original photographs, you can look them up in the City of Toronto aerial photography archives: https://www.toronto.ca/city-governmen...
