The life cycle of an Afghan Pilot is a long one. It can take anywhere from three to four years from the beginning of training to a fully qualified pilot. A pilot's career starts at the Afghan Air Force Academy as cadets and are held to high standards in regards to physical training, education and military customs and courtesies in preparation to become officers in the Afghan Air Force. Upon graduation from the 12-month academy, the cadets will transfer to undergraduate pilot training learning aviation basics. From there they will go to upgrade training where they will learn specialized training in their specific weapons station and become co-pilots and air commanders. Eventually a select few will move on to instructor pilot training where they become responsible for the success of future pilots in the AAF.
