BIG ADVICE : NEVER CHANGE THE BIDIRECTIONAL DSHOT SETTING WITH A CONNECTED BATTERY TO THE ESC ! AND IF YOU ACTIVATE BD-DSHOT AND CONNECT THE BATTERY, MAKE SURE THAT YOU CAN DISCONNECT IT VERY VERY QUICKLY (WITH PHYSICAL ELECTRIC XT60 EMERGENCY STOP SWITCH IN BEST CASE). SAME FOR ANY CHANGE OF THE MOTOR/ESC SETTING OR ANY ESC FIRMWARE FLASH. AND USE A LOWER S BATTERY IF POSSIBLE. I'm relatively new to this hobby (about 5 months) I don't have high level of knowledge yet. Before this accident with this damaged motors i was thinking BD-DShot is needed for 3D mode... I also thought that you don't need BlueJay for the BD-DShot protokoll and that Blujay is just an alternative firmware with more settings for more tuning of the ESCs. I still don't know if BlueJay is really needed in general for BLHeli_S ESCs and active BD-DShot ? (because my Crux35 with BLHeli_S ESCs can run BD-DShot and I did not any Blujay flash...) I think some issue with bidirectional DShot has caused this error and damage. The motors were destroyed very fast, in only 3-5 seconds or less. Already after 1-2 seconds they started smoking and blocking ! That was really schocking and scaring me. I think some kind of very bad frequency modulation or sparks must have destroyed them or just 100% throttle ? (Don't think this can happen just by 100% voltage without the props ?) I thought bidirectional DShot is required for 3D mode. After this fail, I have now read on betaflight dot com what bidirectional DShot is. It has nothing to do with 3D! It can improve the behavior of the motors in 3D mode (with certain PWM frequencies and sync), but has directly nothing to do with 3D mode... I have not flashed my BLHerli_S ESCs with BlueJay before activating BD-DShot or done any standard firmware update for the ESC. Is that a must-have ? Maybe this was one of the mistakes ? But still, even if that was a mistake, I can not understand how it can be possible that there is no security lock that the motors just can't turn up without arming (in a disarmed mode). That this happend is very very bad, surprising, shocking and scary ! ___ LUCK IN MY MISFORTUNE ___ Actually, I was still lucky in my misfortune. If I had activated BD-DShot without battery. And then would have thought everything runs well and made the props on it. I would have definitely had an accident (maybe with health damage) when connecting the battery first time. ___ WARRANTY IN THIS CASE ? ___ I think all the 4 motors are damaged. Even if one motor can turn slowly doesnt mean it was not damaged too... Because it spinning smoking and very hot too. I think these damages are probably not covered by the manufacturer's warranty. Since I myself have caused a config mod to the motor controls. It's the same with PC hardware. If you do any config mod (e.g. overclock) you usually theoretically lose the warranty. Or is it not a bad modification negligent by me ? On Crux35 with BLHeli_S ESC i did not had that issue... It could still be a manufacturer error... Anyway, if it's a manufacturer error, then this would only be an isolated case, and this video doesn't need to be public anymore because then it would not be a general problem or warning video and not for interest to the public. However, because the manufacturer does not write in the specs that BD-DShot or 3D mode is supported, the chances of getting a warranty claim are rather bad. ___ WHAT I LEARNED __ This error now costs me 4 new motors (minmum 35 - 60€) if it is not covered by warranty. But I learned something and also learned how to handle a drone even more safely in the future. Because without fingers you can't fly a FPV freestyle drone anymore.... ___ MY ADVICE FOR YOU __ I advise you to remove the props every time before any change on motor settings (especially after BD-DShot has been activated) or before any update of BF (You never know what settings are gonna be changed really...). And test with the drone on the table and with a battery everything that is possible without props first. It is also good if you are prepared to disconnect the battery very quickly. A XT60 switch would be nice to have for this (I gonna build one). ___ MUSIC ___ Mulholland - King Canyon ( under Youtube Audio Library licence )
