In November at the Ballard Locks, Army Corps Employees volunteer to scrape barnacles in the tunnels. This helps minimize damage to millions of migrating Salmon Smolt that pass through the Locks in the Spring. The scraping is done during annual maintenance in the large locks, which are 'pumped out' for the work. Hard work, cold. wet and a bit smelly, both men and women volunteer to do the work.
