Philip Zema MCCJ- First Reading: Sirach 47:2-13 - This passage praises David's faithfulness and leadership, highlighting his trust in God and his role in establishing worship in Israel. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 18:31, 47, 50, 51 - This psalm celebrates God's strength and protection, declaring that His ways are perfect and He is a shield to those who trust in Him. Gospel: Mark 6:14-29 - This passage tells the story of John the Baptist's martyrdom, where Herod beheads him at the request of Herodias' daughter, highlighting the cost of speaking truth to power. These readings remind us of the importance of faithfulness, trust in God, and speaking truth, even in the face of adversity. -The Memorial of Saint Paul Miki and Companions, Martyrs is celebrated on February 6. Saint Paul Miki was a Japanese Jesuit seminarian, and his companions were 25 other Franciscan and Jesuit missionaries and Japanese converts who were crucified together on February 5, 1597, in Nagasaki, Japan, by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. They were arrested, tortured, and paraded 600 miles through many towns for 30 days, singing the Te Deum, before being crucified. Saint Paul Miki preached his final sermon from the cross, forgiving his executioners and stating that he was Japanese. The Japanese style of crucifixion involved putting iron clamps around the wrists, ankles, and throat, and piercing the person with a lance. The martyrs were canonized by Pope Pius IX on June 8, 1862, and are considered the patron saints of Japan. -Thank you for the active participation and for always praying with us.
