What is going on everybody? Welcome back to The Rat’s Nest! This is chrom3rat, and today we are looking at a world where "handholding" isn't exactly in the vocabulary. We’re taking a look at Vicarius, a handcrafted single-player open-world extraction game developed and published by Nocten. If you love the "gear fear" of extraction shooters but prefer a dark, interconnected world you can explore at your own pace, this one is for you. Inside this chaotic demo run: The Human Lawn-Mower: We unlocked a power that creates a rotating sword around our character. Once you upgrade it to three spinning blades, you basically become a walking blender for creepy alien eggs and swarms of fire-spiders. The Minecart Gamble: We discovered a minecart system that transports you to new, high-danger areas of the map. Pro-tip: don't accidentally get back on the cart mid-fight like I did—it’s a one-way ticket away from your loot! Tactical Sprinting & I-Frames: The game gives you a micro-second of invincibility (I-frames) when you dodge/shift. You’ll need every bit of it because the enemies are relentless, and standing in a puddle of acid for even a second is a death sentence. Metroidvania Shortcuts: We managed to drag a power cell across the map to unlock a major shortcut, connecting the sewer-like lower levels back to the start. This is crucial because when you die, you keep your progression and unlocked paths, but you'll need to grind back your resources. The "Science" of Big Baddies: We encountered some giant floating face-hugger monsters that take about six hits to eliminate. They are fast, they spit acid, and they will absolutely cluster-cluck you if you don't use the fire-hallway traps to your advantage. Retro Vibes: The sound effects are super charming and retro, which adds a lot of character to the dark, oppressive atmosphere. The demo is absolutely punishing but incredibly fun.
