The Cabinet of Zimbabwe approved the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 3) Bill, 2026 on 10 February 2026, setting in motion proposed changes to the 2013 Constitution. These changes, among other things would; 🔵Shift the way the president is elected from a direct national vote to election by Parliament, 🔵 Extend the presidential term from five to seven years (potentially allowing President Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain in office until 2030), 🔵Introduce wider governance reforms. The bill was gazetted and opened a 90-day public consultation period, but it has drawn significant opposition, with critics arguing that it undermines democratic norms and should be subject to a referendum before adoption. Listen to this debate between Dr. Justice A. Mavedzenge and Prof. Jonathan Moyo on the constitutionalism of this amendment bill.
