When someone says, “You speak English so well,” or “Where are you really from?” — it’s not just an innocent comment. It’s an echo of colonization, exclusion, and erasure. Every racial microaggression we experience as Filipino Americans is part of a larger system — one built on centuries of being othered, criminalized, hypersexualized, and made invisible. These moments might seem small, but they carry generations of historical trauma — from the wars and violence in the homeland to the hate violence in this alleged land of the free. One of the reasons why I started studying and writing about microaggressions 2 decades ago was because I truly believed that we could educate others and help obliterate them. When we name them, we’re doing more than just calling out bad behavior; rather, we’re dismantling the systems that made them possible in the first place. And in doing so, we’re honoring our ancestors who endured so much pain back then, just so that things could be a little bit easier for us today.
