Aaaaaaah, love the smell of “oliebollen!!...Making Oliebollen every year on New Years Eve to celebrate our Dutch roots…I am from Holland and I learn how to make Oliebollen from my mother, Oma Spits, as known to her grandkids... I make Oliebollen for my family... It's a tradition from Holland to have them every year on December 31st. New Year's Eve...Making Oliebollen has always been a huge tradition in my family for New Years Eve…These delicious Dutch treat, similar to a doughnut, are an important part of the New Years Eve tradition in the Netherlands (Holland). This recipe was handed down to my sister and I by our mother, Oma Spits…This deep fried pastry is filled with raisins and dusted with powdered sugar…They stay tasty for 1-2 days and they can be warmed up in the microwave, but freshly baked is just unbeatable and irresistible… Dutch Oliebollen (How to say:'Oh-Lee BOL EN'), means grease balls Oma Spits recipe(1959) Ingredients; 1 package of fast rising instant yeast 1 cup of warm tap water-heated in the micro-wave for about 30 seconds. 2 cups of flour enriched or unbleached 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoon sugar 1 cup warm milk-heated in the micro-wave for about 45 seconds.(heat to feel) 1 box of 1lb. raisins 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract 1 teaspoon of orange grated rind from an orange and save about a little less then 1/4 cup of the juice from that orange...If you don't have orange, you can use 1 teaspoon orange extract, or nothing is ok... 1 to 2- 48 oz of vegetable oil or canola oil, depending on size of the deep fryer bag of powdered sugar Directions: Pre-heat oven at 150 degrees, then turn it off… Dissolve the yeast with warm water, that was in the microwave for 30 seconds, stir and mix…Set aside and let it stand for 5 minutes... In a large bowl, combine and mix flour, salt, and sugar… Add the dissolve yeast to the flour mixture…. Stir in warm milk, then add raisins and vanilla extract…Stir it well with your a spoon, no electric mixture… Cover the bowl with a moist towel…Leave the batter in warm oven for 1 hour or more, to let it rise or set the batter in a warm place for 1 hour or so… Then stir the dough slightly to let out the air…Replace it back in the oven, let it rise again for about 10-15 min. or so, while getting the oil heated in the fryer… Stir and add orange grinds and the juice to the batter... Heat the oil in a deep fryer or a heavy deep pan to 375 degrees… Use two metal spoons dip into the hot oil, grab and shape/mold the dough into balls, and drop them carefully into the hot oil..Four balls at a time... Fry the balls until nice golden brown, about 1-2 minutes…Approx.1-1 1/2 minute on each side or until nice and golden…Do not over fry it...Use a strainer to tip them over…Place the balls on a paper towel to drain the oil…. Sprinkle with powdered sugar…Place on a nice plater or plate...Serve while it is hot... Makes 1 dozen large or 2 dozen medium Oliebollen... Enjoy!...Love and hugs, Erica
