We visited Holbox, a Michelin-star Mexican seafood spot located inside Mercado La Paloma in Downtown Los Angeles, to see if it lives up to the hype, and it absolutely does. Named after the island of Holbox off Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, this casual seafood restaurant focuses on ceviches, tostadas, tacos, and seafood stews, all prepared with incredible care and freshness. On this visit, we ordered the Smoked Kanpachi taco, Scallop taco, and the Sopa de Mariscos. The soup was a tomato-based seafood stew with fish, mussels, shrimp, and fish cake, rich, comforting, and beautifully balanced. It reminded us of a bouillabaisse or cioppino, but with its own identity. The smoked kanpachi was creamy with a nice kick of spice, while the scallops were cooked perfectly, easily some of the best we’ve had. Both tacos were served on blue-corn tortillas. We also tried the sparkling lemonades, which were refreshing and well-balanced. Holbox also offers an 8-course tasting menu on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 6 and 8 p.m. Reservations open on the first day of each month through Resy and sell out quickly. Things to know before you go: Expect a wait - Holbox is popular, but the line moves fast Paid parking is available in the Mercado lot, with free street parking nearby Not very dog-friendly - outdoor seating is limited and located in the parking area Bottom line: If you want Michelin-star-quality Mexican seafood in a casual setting that won’t break the bank, Holbox is absolutely worth the visit.
