In late1961 and early 1962, I met this girl in my high school library through secret messages we wrote back and forth in a book that was in the library. After a few days, we lost contact with the notes in the books. I knew her first name and she knew mine. I searched for her for weeks, unable to find her. We met by accident at a dance near Riverview Gardens High School. At the dance, the music was blasting so loud it was impossible to hear each other properly, and she kept teasing me the whole time. I finally asked her not to be so hard on me, but she pretended to mishear and said, loud enough for others to catch, "You have a hard-on for me?" I got so embarrassed trying to explain it was just "hard on me," but she wouldn't let it die. She'd bring it up in every conversation after that, laughing like it was the funniest thing. I had saved up some money, so I invited her to a fancy restaurant on Chambers Road. Lombardo in St Louis, Missouri. We rode the bus there together. While we were eating, we talked about music, and I mentioned that I wrote songs. Right away, she wanted me to write one for her on the spot, right there in the restaurant.
