At 4.40am on the 21st March 1918, German guns roared out across the Western Front. In just a few hours more than a million shells slammed into British Third and Fifth Army positions on the Somme. Operation Michael, the first of a series of brutal assaults, collectively known as the Spring Offensive had begun. Over the course of the coming days and weeks the allies would fall back a staggering 40 miles towards the vital city of Amiens. Although they weren’t to know it, Australian troops would once again enter the fray to thwart that German plan at a little known town called Villers Bretonneux.
