String Quartet (1929) I. Vif et décidé II. Trés lent [6:04] III. Trés animé [13:39] Petru Manoliu, violin Jules Joubert, violin Louis Reisacher, viola Fritz Moser, cello At once the music shows that its cultural background is French, not German. The composer’s touch is light; he can be serious without a trace of solemnity; he has both wit and charm. The work is beautifully written for its delicate medium. The basis is tonal, but the harmony is personal and not conventional. In the first movement one observes Binet’s quick power of expressing changeable moods; thus his dancing first subject gives way to a suaver melody. The predominating mood is sunny, with delightful shadows from passing clouds; but sweet-sounding as it is, this music is positive. The slow movement is gentle in its approach, warm, and poetic. One’s attention is held all the time by the composer’s firm yet delicate power of invention; and as it fades away, one feels that one has been told of a personal and important secret. The finale has that rarity in modern music—a real sense of gaiety. But underneath its lively, rhythmic jollity one feels that there is a gentle poetic thought that is never forgotten. There is a weighty harmonic climax before the coda. [LL 498] Art by Valérie Favre
