Contact Details for Andy (who made this awesome device!) Andy: [email protected] https://ithaca.craigslist.org/grd/d/w... - Original post I found on our local craigslist showing his work. He is open to fabricating more kilns just like this one, or modifying details as requested. He uses 11 gauge steel (1/8") which should last a lifetime. Beautiful enough to be featured as a recreational fire pit, and rugged/functional enough to be dragged all over the place to do hard work! This particular kiln is set up to be 3' wide, 2' tall and has a bottom plate 14" across. There is a 2" 'lip' that runs around the top rim to act as a simple handle to adjust or move the kiln, as well as redirect smoke back into flame front and simple triangular legs that make the 'feet'. If you have very soft ground you'd want either bricks under the legs or add welded flat bits to the bottom of the legs so it doesn't sink in. You may want to search for concepts like 'kontiki kiln', 'flame top biochar kiln', 'flame curtain biochar' and 'mobile biochar kiln' to get more ideas and see other design possibilities. By no means am I suggesting this model is the best of the best, but the thick steel, the angle of the walls and the overall geometry come together to make some really nice charcoal, it is really nice to look at and it should last a very very long time. I'm hoping this is the start of a fun relationship where we can continue to evolve these designs. I envision a more truly conical design that fits into a base that has a long copper tube circuit running through it so the kiln can heat huge volumes of hot water on demand while making charcoal.
