Patient diagnosed with hole between trachea & esophagus, recovers after complex surgery 45 year-old Vimala had been struggling to eat for four months and had to be kept on a liquid diet. She revealed that even if she swallowed her saliva or some water, she would start to incessantly cough. Dr. Shishir Shetty, Head Oncology Services and GI & Colorectal Cancer Specialist at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, explained that the patient had a hole between her trachea and oesophagus. This condition is known as Tracheoesophagal Fistula, and resulted in any ingested food particles to end up in the patient’s lungs. This, coupled with repeated chest infections, made breathing extremely difficult for Vimala. Vimala and her son-in-law went from hospital to hospital during the worldwide lockdown before they met with Dr. Shetty, who assembled a team of experts to perform the complex surgery on the patient. The surgery was long and complicated and involved cutting of the trachea from above and below and placing a tube to assist in breathing. Vimala is now healthy and has been discharged.
